Tour Description

Hatha Yoga is the basis of all Yoga systems. The word hatha is a compound of the words ha and tha meaning sun and moon, the word “hatha” means forceful. It is a strong practice done for purification, a preparatory stage of physical purification that the body practices for higher meditation. Hatha represents opposing energies: hot and cold (fire and water, following similar concept as yin-yang), male and female, positive and negative.

Hatha yoga attempts to balance mind and body via physical postures or “asanas,” purification practices, controlled breathing, and the calming of the mind through relaxation and meditation. Asanas teach poise, balance and strength and are practiced to improve the body’s physical health and clear the mind in preparation for meditation.

Upon arrival, you will make yourself at home, remove shoes and socks, and bask in the space of tranquility. You can then sign in and find a mat on the floor of your choosing. Teaching styles vary but each instructor guarantees a meaningful experience. Breathe deeply and move through the hatha yoga poses. Your instructor will help you calm your mind and strengthen your body. Listen to meditative music and relax in the peaceful atmosphere of the studio. Urban Yoga Foundation provides water for anyone who may need some before or after the hour long class is over.

The Urban Yoga Foundation works to share the benefits of yoga and mindfulness with the communities of New York City. The skilled yoga teachers will train participants to bring the lessons of mind and body awareness beyond the yoga studio and ameliorate the bustle and stress of urban life.

    Class at UYF is always a treat! Classes tend to be Hatha style, but each instructor is different. There's always plenty of room, and the studio has all the supplies you need (mats, blocks, blankets, etc). Good for all levels - plenty of help for those new to yoga, and good modifications for more advanced students. No fashion shows or competition. Ring the bell downstairs to be let up. Ghylian is so welcoming and a great source of yoga and health advice. Sometimes there is delicious tea! Great yoga with a relaxing vibe.

How To Get There

Take the 1 train to 157th Street or C train to 155th Street. The studio is located on the lower level of the house.
