Embark on a brisk hike along the Gowanus shoreline and discover why the Gowanus Canal has been inspiring creativity for decades. In a neighborhood once notorious for industrial pollution and the death of waterfront marine life, a renaissance is underway. Explore the neighborhood’s quirky art and athletic scene while hearing stories of its past and anticipated changes to come. Learn how you can get involved to ensure the neighborhood’s growth supports the exciting dynamics between business, art and recreational activity.
Tours are led by Rich Garr, a local artist and guide specializing in street art, or Owen Foote, a local architect and avid canoeist who has advocated for Gowanus neighborhood improvements over the past 25 years. Each month this tour evolves depending on public art, events, and the accessibility of hidden treasures, art studios, and galleries. The walk may conclude at the pumping station or near the Gowanus Dredgers boathouse, where you can warm up with hot coffee, cocoa, and croissants during winter months, or embark on a self-guided canoe voyage during the summer.
