Customarily enjoyed at weddings and other celebrations, banana juice (and beer!) has long been a key component of Rwandan parties. Although today banana juice can be bought from the local store, the traditional technique for making your own brew is a much greater labor of love. During the morning of your Azizi Life Experience, you will work with your rural host to collect the green bananas and leaves needed to begin the process. Next you’ll dig a hole and bury the bananas to ripen over time. After sharing a simple meal with your host family, you’ll head into the valley to collect water. The ripening process takes four days, but don’t worry- you won’t need to wait. Your hosts will have some already-buried bananas for you to dig up. You’ll then peel, mash, and strain the bananas using traditional techniques, and voila- you’ve made authentic banana juice! The day finishes back at the Azizi Life office where the juice is boiled and ready for you to enjoy.
Kigali to Huye Road, Muhanga, Southern Province, Rwanda, Muhanga, Southern Province, Rwanda
By Car from Kigali
As you approach Muhanga, look out for St Andre Catholic Church on a hill to your left. Just after this on the left is the prison, its entrance tucked back from the road. After 30 meters there is a paved road forking off to your right; ignore this. Keep going on the main paved road. Look out for a FHI sign on your right 50 meters past the fork. Just after this is a Presbyterian Church on the right. 30 meters further, on the left-hand side of the road, you will see the Azizi Life sign. At the sign, turn right up a dirt road and our brown gates are a few metres up the road on the left. A private car service can be arranged for an additional fee.
Muhanga (formerly called Gitarama) is an easy 50-minute bus ride from the Nyabugogo taxi park in Kigali. Horizon and Volcano busses depart every 15 minutes from Nyabugogo to Muhanga, and tickets cost 900 francs. An Azizi Life Experience representative can meet you at the taxi stop in Muhanga town. The office and shop are only a 10-minute walk from the town center.
