Tour Description

Embark on an out-of-the-ordinary adventure as you engage with stories of the past on this interactive tour! Walk through the Church of S.Maria dell' Idris and to Sassi di Matera where the Stones of Matera are located. Sassi di Matera is believed to be one of the first settlements in Italy, providing a home to people since as early as 7000 BC. Journey on towards the historical churches of San Giovanni in Monterrone, which have been beautifully preserved since their creation thousands of years ago. Enter and observe demonstrations of traditional tuff working by an expert. Tuff work is when a calcarenite rock is dug into to create beautiful cave spaces and buildings.

Immerse yourself in local culture as you visit a traditional Matera house made of tuff. These ancient neighborhoods are beautifully historic and unique. Matera is the only place in the world where people still live in the same houses of their ancestors from over 9,000 years ago! The area is known for “sassi,” a series of grottoes carved out of limestones, making it a unique and spectacular place unlike any other city. End your tour with a traditional "happy hour" aperitif with locally made products.
