Grassroutes journeys are responsible holidays in Indian villages wherein local communities welcome you to partake in their lives. Discover the true essence of India: the richness of culture, the abundance of nature, the preserved and practiced ancient traditions, the colorful and diverse lifestyles, and above all, the kind and loving people.
Village Dehna is located in the city of Shahapur in the Thane district of Maharashtra, India’s third-largest state, and is home to a warm and welcoming Hindu Maratha community. 130 kms from India’s financial capital, Mumbai, Dehna falls in the highest rainfall region of Maharashtra. With Grassroutes, you can embark on an adventure set in the midst of India’s heartland in the proverbial land of a thousand waterfalls and enjoy an amazing two days of rural activities and rejuvenation—perfect for those looking for a different kind of vacation!
Discover daily life in Dehna as you participate in a variety of village adventures and nature activities including traditional rice and spice grinding, collecting water and chopping wood with locals, climbing trees, birdwatching, walking through the forest, and cooking tasty meals with village women. Depending on the time of year, you will also have the opportunity to learn from farmers how to plough the field (May), sow rice and wheat (June), separate the growing crop from wild weeds (July), transplant rice seedlings into paddy fields (July – August), pick wild vegetables (June – September), and harvest the season’s bounty (October).
