What you’ll do

Visit the recycling center and learn about canners, recycling, composting and the double-edged impact our consumption has on people and the environment. Discover a day in the life of a canner while lending a hand in the sorting of cans by material, brand, and size. Learn how compost is collected and processed at a local level as your team participates in making the end result.

This is a nonprofit recycling center where canners -- people who redeem cans and bottles for a 5-cent deposit -- interact with their community through recycling and more. It is the only nonprofit redemption center in NYC's five boroughs. In 2018, more than 700 canners redeemed over 11 million cans and bottles!
