Immerse yourself in Cambodian culture through authentic local food. Learning to cook these dishes is the best way to discover the culture and daily life of the people of Cambodia. Begin your culinary adventure by meeting your English-speaking guide, who will pick you up at your hotel. Head to the local market, and learn about regional ingredients and produce. Then, get cooking! Create authentic local dishes with the help of your guide. Finally, enjoy the meal you've prepared.
We started the tour at the local market, where we could try some local food and our guide told us about markets in Cambodia. We saw many specialities that were completely new to us. Our guide explained how they make palm sugar, how to know which one is the best, we learnt a lot about the different kinds of fish and their preparation as well. It was a great way to start the tour as the market in Siem Reap is very crowded and in this local market we had time to look around and it felt much more authentic. We continued our way to the place of the cooking class. It is next to a huge field, we could see the sunset and the area is very beautiful. We prepared a salad, a main dish and dessert, all of them were very delicious. Our guide explained each step and gave each of us something to do. We learnt how to make banana leaf bowls and the food was cooked in them. Everything was very well planned, we had enough time to prepare each dish and then to enjoy the meal. We liked this tour a lot and would definitely recommend it.
Excellent chef/teacher and great introduction to the market!
My cousin found this class online and it was so much fun. Ben was an excellent instructor and explained everything thoroughly. The market tour was fun and I have a great appreciation for fried crickets now. The meal was soooooo yummy: Banana Blossom Salad, Chicken Amok and Banana Rice Cake.
My friend and I have been working in Cambodia for over 3 years now. We decided on a last minute weekend vacation to Siem Reap. Since this wasn't our first time in Siem Reap we were a little bored of the pub street scene and looking for a new experience. So, we decided to take a cooking class. What a wonderful experience it was. Ben, the owner, met us at our hotel and then proceeded to take us to a Cambodian market where he explained a little about the day to day life of the workers there. After this we headed off to a small village where the cooking class was conducted. We made fried spring roles, chicken amok, and pumpkin custard. Ben explained every step perfectly. If authenticity is what you are looking for this is it!
It was a really authentic experience and also very interesting to get to know a little bit how local people do their grocery shopping, how do they prepare food and cook. I recommend this experience to everyone who wants to spend some exciting and interesting afternoon in Siem Reap. By the way the food was very tasty, we couldn't wait to get the recipes. Thank you Ben for everything :)
Definitely a precious experience in Siem Reap! Ben is an amazing person he replied my email within seconds! Ben explained well the culture of the Cambodia, brought us to the local wet market and understand the local culture, and the insects testing (I just smiled it off), and of course teaching us the most authentic Cambodian cuisine! The amok chicken is the bomb! And not to mention, how kind and talented person Ben is by running this program to help the orphans in the rural village, such a sweetheart! Ben will pick up from your respective accommodation and send back after the class with a nice mini van so you just have to sit back and relax! Very much effortless! Overall I just say this experience cost even more than just 24 dollars! Now I have all the recipes sent by Ben in my email so I guess I will be the best cook back in my hometown! If you have time to kill in Cambodia I highly recommend to join this cooking class and do charity at the same time! Thanks Ben! Thanks Cambodia!
I had a great time doing this class today - Ben is informative and entertaining, great fellow participants and just lots of fun. Definitely recommended.
